Chasing Jesse, Chasing Dreams

Vancouver's own Chasing Jesse, featuring Sydney James and Sky Wyatt

After spending years working the circuit of Western Canada, Vancouver country artists Sydney James and Sky Wyatt have come together as Chasing Jesse. As Chasing Jesse, Wyatt and James are ready to show Canada that they are this nation’s next great country music duo.

In the process of writing material for their first full length release and preparing to head into the studio in January 2012, Chasing Jesse are ready to show Canada their strong harmonies, catchy lyrics and energetic live show.

Similar to Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, this pair have taken their love and real life experience and expressed it in their songs. “It feels that much more real and powerful when the songs we sing come from the heart”. Good insight to the strength of their bond is reflected in songs like “Live by the Sun” and “Stripped Down”.

“We’re really excited to get in the studio and lay a bunch of stuff down. Hopefully we can finish the record in the spring!” says Wyatt. “Our first single will be released in late-spring of 2012, with the album coming out after that,” says James.

Before forming Chasing Jesse, Wyatt and James each pursued solo careers. “We started singing together and talking about the idea of doing a project that was in the vein of Sugarland and Lady Antebellum,” says Wyatt, “as we got further into [this new project], it made more sense to conglomerate all of our efforts to create Chasing Jesse.”

Wyatt, who is responsible for bringing his soulful male voice to the Chasing Jesse sound, says his first love was not country music. As a child he preferred the sounds of Motown and rhythm and blues. Wyatt still has a Motown band, named Cakewalk, that plays shows around Vancouver.

James, on the other hand, “has always been a country music fan.” She says she loves the storytelling behind the songwriting. Unlike Wyatt, James has always been a country performer.

Chasing Jesse also runs their own music publishing label, Fast Car Records. “Fast Car Record is our little indie label,” says Wyatt. “We are indie artists who are unsigned, and we use [Fast Car] as our publishing company.”

When asked where their name comes from, Sydney chuckles before telling the truth:
“No one knows this yet, you’re the first to hear it! Chasing Jesse was inspired by two different things. One is our friend and cowriter of many of our songs, Jesse Tucker, who is an amazing player, songwriter and person. He’s impossible to pin down for a writing session because he’s so busy, so it feels like we’re always chasing him! The second thing has to do with our great big Newfoundland dog Murphy, who travels with us everywhere. He’s getting on in years and we’ve decided that we want him to chance to be a big brother, so we’re looking for a Newfoundland puppy. We’ve picked his name, Jesse, because then Sky, Murphy and I will literally be chasing Jesse!”

Keep an eye out for Chasing Jesse as they continue to tour throughout Western Canada in the coming months. With the release of their first full-length studio album, only good things can come for Chasing Jesse.
